Required Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

• 3+ years of experience underwriting disability insurance in a fast-paced environment

• Approval authority of $7K+ in disability insurance underwriting

• Strong knowledge of underwriting policies, guidelines, and risk evaluation practices

• Ability to assess medical history, occupational hazards, and financial background

• Strong communication skills with ability to interact with agents, brokers, and stakeholders

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

• Ability to manage ambiguity and adapt to changing priorities



Preferred Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

• 5+ years of experience in individual disability insurance underwriting

• Higher approval limits ($10K+ IDI, $15K+ BOE, $250K+ Buy/Sell)

• Strong understanding of risk selection including medical, non-medical, and financial factors

• Experience with underwriting systems, product rules, and administrative tools

• Strong interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills

• Technologically savvy with strong digital aptitude



Underwriter Consultant Overview:

• The Underwriter Consultant is responsible for evaluating and managing all aspects of disability insurance underwriting in a fast-paced and collaborative environment

• This role focuses on assessing risk by analyzing medical history, occupational exposure, and financial background to determine appropriate underwriting decisions, including approval, modification, or decline of applications

• The position requires a strong understanding of underwriting guidelines, risk management principles, and morbidity factors to ensure sound decision-making and profitable outcomes

• This role involves frequent collaboration with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to communicate underwriting decisions effectively and facilitate business placement

• The Underwriter Consultant will also contribute to process improvements, support operational efficiency, and help maintain high service standards

• Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities

• The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset while thriving in a dynamic and evolving insurance environment



Job Duties:

• Evaluate and underwrite disability insurance applications

• Assess risk based on medical history, occupational hazards, and financial background

• Determine whether to approve, modify, or decline applications

• Apply underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures

• Communicate underwriting decisions to agents, brokers, and stakeholders

• Build relationships to facilitate placement of business

• Collaborate with stakeholders to gather necessary information

• Identify and support process improvement initiatives

• Maintain service quality and underwriting accuracy

• Work independently while managing multiple priorities

Specific Details to Call Attention To:

• Must have hands-on disability insurance underwriting experience (required)

• Minimum 3+ years of underwriting experience with $7K+ approval authority

• Strong preference for 5+ year’s experience and higher approval limits

• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment is critical
