Qualifications:
• Associate Degree in Turfgrass mgmt./agronomy/biology or currently enrolled in program.
• Will consider high school graduate with turf maintenance experiences.
• Golf course experience is preferred, experience with automated irrigation system is a plus.
• Strong attention to details. Ability to study and understand instructions. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Valid NC driver’s license.
• Must be capable of performing physical labor (including but not limited to heavy lifting (50 lbs) associated with maintenance or repairs to equipment, irrigation systems, or structures).
• Primary occupational demands will require:
o Wear face covering or respirator (respirator fit test and pulmonary function test required)
o Wear hearing protection
o Drive turf management equipment or other task-required vehicles (eye exam & MVR check)
o Must also be able to work outdoors under local ambient conditions.

Scope of Work:
• Assist in maintenance of warm and cool season turfgrass on a development & research facility in various turfgrass and ornamentals settings such golf turf (greens, fairways), sports field, and residential lawn.
• Assist in maintenance of warm and cool season utility/forage grasses and weeds on a development & research facility in various simulated settings such roadside, railroad, bare ground, forestry, rangeland and pasture.
• Inspection of managed grass areas via visual assessment and tools. Record, report, and respond to identified issues for discussion with researchers.
• Safely operate equipment (powered and non-powered tools) required for turf maintenance.
• Safely apply pesticides required for research and maintenance, maintain proper record keeping for applications.
• Follow and comply with current safety procedures as well as assist in identifying new ones.
• Assist in maintenance of equipment, including mowers, tractors and sprayers.
• Assist in operating irrigation systems to achieve specific research or maintenance goals.

Experience Gained:
• Hands-on experience managing all aspects of creeping bentgrass and dwarf bermudagrass on USGA-spec putting greens.
• Integrated pest management practices on disease, weed, and insect control for intensively managed turfgrass in transition zones.
• Maintenance of small-plot research trials, including under automated fine turf rain-out shelter
• Assisting with research team who utilizes remote sensing, digital sensors, drones for field trial assessment.
• Opportunity to obtain NC pesticide applicator license.
