Job Description
Overview

We’re seeking skilled Speech Experts (SMEs) to contribute their specialized knowledge and enhance the quality of our AI training datasets, with a focus on speech aesthetics. We are specifically looking for exceptional discriminative listening skills. We need highly trained ears capable of identifying nuanced qualities (pitch, inflection, intentionality) in audio that general listeners may overlook. This role offers the chance to work remotely, but the role requires above-average listening equipment (e.g. monitors instead of headphones).

What You'll Do

Domain Expertise Advisory: Focused on speech aesthetics; collaborate with other subject matter experts to ensure consistency and accuracy in data. Your trained ear will help set the gold standard for quality and rigor in speech annotation.

Guideline Development: Create, edit, and maintain high-quality annotation guidelines tailored to speech aesthetics. Ensure these guidelines are up-to-date, clear, and concise to enable vendors to deliver accurate annotations.

Quality Assurance: Evaluate and grade the quality of speech annotations produced by vendor. Identify areas of improvement and provide feedback to optimize annotation quality, especially where subtle differences in emotion, audio quality, intention, and adherence are critical.

Data Annotation: Directly annotate data for key tasks when necessary, including writing prompt responses and judging output quality datasets. Your discriminative skills will provide reliable signals for training data.

Expert Evaluation: Assess speech samples for subtle differences in emotion, audio quality, intention, and adherence to task requirements across our products.

Quality Assurance: Provide reliable, high-fidelity quality signal for datasets, addressing gaps in quality assurance observed in datasets.

What Would Make You A Great Fit:

Discriminative Skills: You have a professionally “posttrained” ear, able to reliably (=90%) discriminate between extremely subtle differences in speech, such as:

24kHz vs. 48kHz audio (transients, noise floor, sibilance, fidelity)

Scripted vs. spontaneous conversation in double-blind settings

Subtle emotional cues, intention, and adherence in speech

Equipment: Owns and is familiar with above-average listening equipment (e.g., studio monitors rather than consumer headphones)

Sony MDR 7506

Sennheiser HD600

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro

Background:

Strong fits for this role include:

Audio engineers

Mastering engineers

Music producers

Voice Therapists

Voice Actors and Radio announcers, talk show hosts, comedians

Anyone extremely “in tune” with conversation and “reading the room”

Domain Knowledge: Expertise in speech, audio engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with audio fidelity, emotional nuance, and conversational dynamics.

Deep Knowledge: Demonstrated deep understanding and expertise in speech aesthetics, including both technical and artistic aspects.

Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey complex ideas and guidance to internal teams and external vendors.

Analytical Skills: Exceptional analytical abilities to identify trends, evaluate annotation quality, and provide actionable feedback.

Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners to achieve shared goals.

Adaptability: Flexibility and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes in a rapidly evolving environment.

What We Offer

Remote work that will have a significant impact on the development of advanced AI speech models.

Preferred availability of 40 hrs/week. You'll join calibration calls with the Client's team 2-5x per week.

If you are passionate about contributing your expertise to revolutionize the world of AI, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
