Job Description

Required Education
• Master’s degree
• Associate’s degree required for RN applicants.

Required Certifications
• Active Arizona LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker), LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), or LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist)
OR
• Active RN license with Behavioral Health experience (Compact License accepted where applicable), license must be active and unrestricted

Required Qualifications / Skills / Experience
• Behavioral Health Utilization Management experience
• Experience reviewing clinical records and making medical necessity determinations
• Concurrent review and discharge planning experience
• Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
• Experience coordinating care with providers and interdisciplinary teams
• Knowledge of behavioral health terminology and clinical documentation
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working with community behavioral health resources
• Ability to handle confidential information appropriately
• Strong organizational and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications / Skills / Experience
• Experience using InterQual, MCG, ASAM, LOCUS, or similar medical necessity criteria
• Medicaid managed care experience
• Experience with adult and child/adolescent populations
• Crisis intervention and triage experience
• Experience supporting quality improvement initiatives

Behavioral Health Utilization Management Clinical Consultant Overview
• Remote Utilization Management role supporting behavioral health members across the continuum of care
• Reviews clinical information and applies medical necessity criteria, clinical guidelines, policies, and professional judgment to determine appropriate levels of care
• Conducts concurrent reviews, discharge planning activities, and utilization management reviews
• Partners with healthcare providers, care teams, and community resources to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes
• Identifies opportunities for care management referrals and continuity of care support
• Supports members with behavioral health needs through clinical review, coordination, and evidence-based decision making
• Maintains accurate documentation and prepares reports related to utilization management activities and outcomes
• Works in a highly collaborative environment while maintaining productivity and regulatory compliance standards

Job Duties
• Review behavioral health clinical information and determine medical necessity
• Conduct concurrent reviews and discharge planning activities
• Apply clinical guidelines, policies, and utilization management criteria
• Analyze medical records and clinical documentation
• Coordinate care with providers, members, and interdisciplinary teams
• Facilitate referrals to care management programs and community resources
• Support continuity of care and transitions between levels of care
• Provide clinical interventions, triage support, and crisis coordination as needed
• Identify opportunities to improve quality outcomes and resource utilization
• Educate providers on utilization management processes and documentation requirements
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and reports
• Track utilization management outcomes and key performance indicators
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives
• Ensure compliance with organizational, state, and federal requirements
