Job Description
Required Education and Experience
• Education: BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering with coursework/labs in NVH/Acoustics.
• Experience: 5-7 years of hands-on, physical testing experience in NVH, Acoustics, or Noise Control. Internship experience counts.
Required Technical Skills:
1. Initiative & Hands-On Aptitude: Proven ability to work independently on physical tasks.
2. Data Interpretation: Experience processing and interpreting frequency/acoustic data.
3. Instrumentation: Practical knowledge of applying microphones, accelerometers, and data acquisition systems.
Ideal Differentiators (Nice-to-Haves)
• Practical Hobby/Skills: Experience with hand tools, carpentry, car audio installation, or fixing mechanical systems.
• Audio Concepts: Knowledge of audio metrics like intelligibility.
• Simulation Experience: NVH simulation experience is a plus, but cannot substitute for hands-on testing experience.
Key Responsibilities
• Plan, set up, execute, and analyze sound/acoustic tests on machinery.
• Design and build cab mockups for testing at the Tech Center and Proving Grounds.
• Install and troubleshoot instrumentation (microphones, accelerometers).
• Process and interpret high-frequency acoustic data.
• Collaborate with sound, electronics, and product engineers to review designs and communicate results.
• Initially support senior engineers, with progression to owning project planning and delivery.
Team & Environment
• Team Structure: Part of a larger group of ~27 engineers (20 Caterpillar, 7 agency) focused on Sound and Cooling testing.
• Work Environment: Mix of physical work in test bays and outdoors, and office work for planning/reporting. Collaborative team with schedule flexibility driven by test needs.
Interview & Process
• Process: 1 round of interview.
• Format: Virtual/Panel interview.
• Timeline: Tentatively scheduled for the week of February 23.
Red Flags / Disqualifiers
• Candidates with only simulation/NVH modeling experience and no hands-on physical testing background.
• Inability to perform light physical work or use hand tools.
• Lack of specific experience with acoustic data and instrumentation.
