Job Description
Required Education:
•High school diploma
Preferred Education:
•Bachelor or Master in acoustics, electrical engineering, or a related technical or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Skills:
•3+ years of hands-on acoustic measurement experience in controlled laboratory setting
•Demonstrated experience with audio signal processing and objective audio/speech quality evaluation
•Strong experimental discipline: able to define the metric, build the rig, run the sweep, interpret the trade-offs, recommend a setting, and validate it
•Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for measurement automation, analysis, and reporting
•Working knowledge of speech-enhancement algorithms — multi-microphone beamforming, adaptive noise cancellation, AGC / dynamic range compression, dereverberation, and ML-based enhancement front-ends — and the ability to interpret algorithm behavior from measurement data and give actionable feedback to algorithm developers
•Strong understanding of acoustics, electroacoustic measurement, signal flow, and microphone functionality, selection, and placement
•Hands-on fluency with acoustic test equipment and software (e.g. Audio Precision APx, Klippel, Brüel & Kjær, SoundCheck) and with HATS/manikins and artificial ears for on-device and
on-ear measurement
Preferred Skills:
•Prior work on multi-microphone speech enhancement for wearable devices
•Experience with prototype hardware devices and with designing or commissioning acoustic lab spaces
•Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality technical reports
•Ability to work independently in a lab environment and sustain a daily experimental cadence; strong attention to detail and clear technical communication
Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Acoustic Engineer to own day-to-day acoustic measurement, evaluation, and tuning for a wearable audio program in our Redmond acoustic labs. The role is hands-on and lab-based: build and maintain acoustic test rigs, run daily measurement sweeps against new algorithm and firmware builds, maintain regression tracking so tuning regressions are caught early, and translate measurement results into concrete, actionable tuning recommendations for algorithm and hardware teams. The work also supports speech-enhancement development for smart glasses
Job responsibilities:
•Design and execute repeatable acoustic test protocols in anechoic, semi-anechoic, and reverberant rooms, including impulse response and transfer function measurements, reverberation and noise-field characterization, and calibration and traceability of the full measurement chain
•Build and calibrate realistic speech-in-noise scenes (babble, diffuse and directional interferers, restaurant / cocktail-party conditions) and SNR-controlled playback setups; score speech-in-noise performance across seating geometries, head orientations, and talker distances
•Characterize loudspeakers and transducers: frequency and phase response, sensitivity, distortion (THD/IMD, Rub & Buzz), directivity and polar patterns, max SPL and compression behavior, and leakage/fit sensitivity for wearable form factors
•Quantify signal-enhancement behavior — directivity index, noise reduction, speech distortion, target/interferer suppression trade-offs, latency, and artifact/musical-noise characterization — and assess stability across real-world acoustic conditions
•Operate and maintain multichannel capture rigs: microphone-array calibration and channel matching, clock/sync and latency management, gain staging, and anti-aliasing
•Perform iterative acoustic tuning of gain, EQ, compression, directionality, and enhancement parameters against objective intelligibility and quality metrics (e.g. STI, STOI/ESTOI, HASPI/HASQI, SII, PESQ/POLQA, SNR improvement), and validate settings with listener-facing checks
•Characterize the effect of the wireless transport path on enhanced speech — bandwidth limiting, codec artifacts, packet loss and dropout behavior, and end-to-end/ conversational-turn latency — in partnership with wireless engineering
•Develop Python or MATLAB tooling for automated analysis, batch processing, and regression dashboards
•Establish shared test protocols, calibration references, and reporting formats so that results are reproducible and comparable across Client and external partner labs; support joint test sessions and partner-facing measurement reviews
•Triage acoustic issues raised by researchers, cross-functional partners, and external collaborators, and document methods and results in clear technical reports
