Job Description
Required experience:
• 8+ YoE in Data Engineering (will accept 6+ DE YoE if their resume is otherwise outstanding and supplemented with 2+ non-DE YoE, and they can show experience leading a very broad and/or complex scope of work that requires expert-level DE skills)
Summary:
• Experienced Data Engineer to support our infrastructure work. This role would be primarily responsible for building and modifying high-complexity pipelines and alerting systems for my team in legal.
• Beyond YOE, due to the technical complexity of the role, we'd ideally like to find someone who has experience working on data warehousing and building (+ leading end-to-end projects to build) high-complexity monitoring and alerting systems. We're a very cross functional-heavy team, so someone who is very communicative, collaborative, comfortable navigating ambiguity / tenacious in finding answers, and cognizant of privacy/security would do very well in this role.
• Strong communication skills are essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to keep communications concise and to the point — avoid overly verbose or heavily jargon-laden resumes.
Background Preferences
• No consulting backgrounds: Not interested in candidates from management consulting or traditional consulting firms.
• Startup / self-employed experience is a plus: Values candidates with startup experience or who have owned/operated their own business — shows initiative, scrappiness, and ability to wear multiple hats.
• Big tech not preferred: Does not prioritize candidates from large tech companies — open to (and may prefer) candidates from startups, small-to-mid-size companies, or non-tech industries.
Tenure & Stability
• Strongly prefer long-term roles: Candidates should have 2+ years of tenure at each position. Avoid job-hoppers or candidates with a pattern of short engagements
Minimum Requirements:
• Expert-level SQL (Presto, Postgres, MySQL, etc--any form is fine)
• Expert-level Python
• Expert-level proficiency using pipelining tools (e.g. Airflow, Dataswarm, etc)
• Experience leading DE efforts on large projects with a wide variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Expert-level comms
Preferred Requirements:
• Demonstrated experience using AI to expedite project delivery (or even better--building AI components to help automate workflows for non-technical stakeholders)
• Experience working on projects for highly-regulated industries (e.g. legal, compliance, finance, security, privacy, etc)
• Experience mentoring junior team members
• Experience working in startups / ambiguous environments with a broader scope of work
• Big-tech experience not necessary; non-traditional backgrounds are welcome

• Volunteer work or internship with a law firm or worked in privacy
• Experience with remediating data loss.
Responsibilities:
• Building ETL pipelines: Engineers are responsible for scheduling and querying massive tables, ensuring efficient data extraction and transformation.
• Collaborating with attorneys: Work closely with attorneys and Data Scientists to understand what data is needed, where it is located, when it is required, and which tables are relevant.
• Cross-functional collaboration: Collaborate with various cross functional teams to launch new systems and products. Responsibilities include preparing documentation, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, developing a plan for system building, identifying collaborators, and ensuring successful execution. - **Only those lawfully authorized to work in the designated country associated with the position will be considered.**
